REPOST : Aqua - Aqua (Garden of Delights) 1972 (REQUEST)

Biography : Aqua were founded in Kassel in 1972. They played progressive rock like it was at fashion at those times, thus with a lot of organ. In 1972, too they recorded four self-written songs for to show to promoters and record companies. Though they couldn't make a record company to become interested they got a lot of gigs. Thus, they themselves released a 7" single in 1978, already more smoothed out. In 1981 they did an LP which already was mainstream, like it was up to date, then. The number of copies released was 1000 for each record. The here available CD contains the until now unreleased four songs of 1972, both tracks of their single, and according to the demand of the artists two songs from the LP which still show some progressive influences.

Krautrock in the 70's played not only in the major cities, not only in Berlin,Munich, Dusseldorf, but also in the province. Krautrock that was not only Tangerine Dream, Amon Düül or power plant, which was also Dom,Electric Sandwich,Join In,Kalacacra,Mammut,Morpheus and like the rest of them ... All over Germany there were a lot young musicians, who by the Spirit Krautrock were infected and their more or less own version of progressive rock dared. One of those bands that just was not managed were, was Aqua from the northern province of Hessen Kassel metropolis. The roots of Aqua date back to 1968. 1972 met namely musicians of the bands Inaction and Praeludium Magnum to start the formation Aqua. In the 70s Aqua were then one of the most popular Kassel live acts, alongside such evocative names such as rat poison or Hugo's Rockhoppser. At a recording contract was not enough, but already in the first year took aqua on a 4-track tape recorder,a demo tape with four pieces on. These form the core of this Garden of Delights Publication. In addition,is still the only single included from 1978,with single does not mean that Aqua were now represented in the charts, but that they were selling this at their concerts. Finally, the CD contains two pieces of the LP from 1981 Sexy Boy. In 1984, the band broke up then.

The two songs on the LP,however, are less interesting for the Krautrock fans. When the LP was released at that time was the disappointment in the camp of Aqua Fans also quite large ,since the sound as with many other bands of those years had significantly flattened compared to the 70s and the jazz rock, herbaceous, psychedelic elements of the Aqua- sounds had given an orientation to a more pleasing, easy proggigen Soft Rock. However, the two pieces contained at least make the best of this Musical misconduct dar.

The single reflects the previous phase of the band, which was characterized by organ -heavy hard rock, and can possibly think of Uriah Heep. This impression aroused the band quite well towards the end of the 70s with their live performances.

However, the real gem of this CD are the first four pieces that reflect the full demo from 1972 ! The sound quality here is a bit muffled, but audible. And what you hear here, confident and musically,is the more successful bands early 70 not according to: a herb rocking, sometimes organ - guitar -dominated times sound with elements of jazz and psychedelic rock. The vocals of Klaus Borucki acts somewhat plaintively.

A unanimous verdict is due to the different origin of the material collected years hardly leave. This CD dyed another white spots on the map of Krautrock in the 70s. For me personally, this publication, however, was a special pleasure, because I so far only the LP Sexy Boy knew. There, unfortunately,a rather sterile picture of the band was given that I had personally met as a rousing live act at some concerts late 70s. To so gratifying that finally a treatment of the history of Aqua exists that knows how to convince both musically and by the design of the booklet is here. For here, Garden of Delights its standard remain faithful and give detailed background information on the band's history, from form record covers and offer a good range of band photos. A recommendation for the collectors! Review by adamus67

Aera - Humanum Est & Hand und Fuss 1974 - 1976

Biography : AERA is a band from Germany who performs progressive fusion in the style of NUCLEUS, EMBRYO and DZYAN. Spacey guitar passages are the strongest characteristic in their music, as well as good flute and saxophone passages. They have 6 albums, of which "Humanum Est" is considered their best effort. Bruno Aun

Aera come from the great tradition of Bavarian jazz-rock oriented progressive bands like Embryo, Missus Beastly, Munju, Moira, etc., with a style unique to that area, originating as a highly inventive fusion band, with strong percussion, driving rhythms and lots of space for solos from guitar, sax and flute. Whilst lead by Muck Groh they recorded two albums: HUMANUM EST which presented a most proficient instrumental band with a strong identity, with multi-tracked guitar riffing and near on ever-present wind solos, and then HAND UND FUSS, which was a touch more varied, due to the addition of violin and with Lucky Schmidt dealing more forceful rhythms in a jazzier concoction... - "The Crack In The Cosmic Egg"

Aera from Munich belonged to a group of bands with tight connections to Embryo (others were Missus Beastly, Munju, Real Ax Band, Snowball and some more). Several members of these band frequently exchanged between each others bands during their existence. Not surprisingly they all played a similar and typical musical style, a kind of German fusion/jazz rock with strong sax and flute. Such kind of music is thus dominant on all Aera LPs as they did not change too much throughout the years. If one likes Embryo in their middle seventies period (with Mal Waldron and Charly Mariano), before they went into the ethno-field, one might give also Aera a try. - Achim Breiling, New Gibraltar Encyclopedia Of Progressive Rock

After leaving the flute-centered Ihre Kinder in 1972, guitarist Muck Groh formed the jazz-rock Aera. Similar in sound to mid-period Embryo, Ihre Kinder relied heavily on flutes and saxophones. The band's first album, the all-instrumental Humanum Est, was entirely written by the guitarist. However, by the time of their second album Hand Und Fuss (1976), the musical leadership of the band had switched to wheelchair-bound saxophonist and flautist Klaus Kreuzeder, who included vocals on some of his songs. Although the group disbanded not long after their sophomore effort, Kreuzeder reformed the group in 1978 and released four albums before ending the group for good in 1982. Geoff Orens, AMG

AERA has been a little-known band hailing from a small Bavarian village called “Mechelwind” (hence the title of one track on their second album). Similar to related band EMBRYO members were coming and going but originally the band consisted of guitarist Muck Groh (IHRE KINDER), bass player Dieter Bauer (2066 AND THEN), drummer Wolfgang Teske and wheelchair-bound Klaus Kreuzeder on sax and flute. They issued altogether four studio albums and one live one with changing line-ups and exhibiting different music styles. Their first two releases which can be obtained as a 2-in-1 CD (being a very worthy purchase that luckily I happen to own) are basically revealing a lively jazz-rock sound at times with extended jammin’ not that far away from EMBRYO, KRAAN or NUCLEUS. Their debut “Humanum Est” here in review was already quite an impressing demonstration of their musical prowess though still lacking a bit of variation which is nicely compensated by the addition of their second one on the CD-reissue. The six fully instrumental compositions, all written by guitarist Muck Groh can be basically described as guitar-dominated laid-back virtuoso jazz-rock with some blues and folk tossed in. Very noteable are Kreuzeder’s presentations on sax and flute, two instruments belonging to my favourites in that kind of music. Though being by all means a very noteworthy debut and a highly enjoyable album especially on second side of this record the music seams to become a bit meandering and repetitive. Thus without his counterpart “Hand und Fuss” “Humanum Est” might appear slightly disappointing for advanced Krautrock fans after a few spins. Nevertheless AERA can be considered as another very interesting band within the rich German progressive scene of the 70’s. Moreover it has been one of those making music just for fun without any commerial concern what’s demonstrated very well by the fact that their debut has been rejected by all commercial labels forcing them to publish it on their own one “Erlkonig”. By the way for those wondering what the oddly sounding titles actually mean: they are some sensible nonsense partly in ancient Bavarian idiom that is even incomprehensible to some native speakers like me. Dieter Fischer, ProgArchives.com

Without any doubts “Hand und Fuss” has been the more sophisticated and varied one of AERA’s first two albums. From the original line-up only Groh and Kreutzeder was left-over and their sound gained a lot from the addition of violinist Christoph Krieger. Musical leadership has been taken over more or less by Kreutzeder and composing has been shared between Groh and the new bass player Peter Malinowski . Their new drummer Lucky Schmidt managed to bring much more forceful rhythms with a jazzier orientation into their music. Musicianship by all band members is here absolutely outstanding and each of the seven compositions is a little gem on its own. Highlights are the highly diversified “Mechelwind”, the inventive “Elephen Elephants” with an amazing drum solo and the bolero-type “Kamele On”. But the remaining tracks are really not inferior at all to those ones. Maybe worth mentioning that Klaus Kreutzeder presents some jazzy scat singing on “Ad Absurdum”, actually the only “vocals” apart from some weird yowling in the finish of the last track.
Finally it’s just left to say for me that I’d highly recommend AERA’s second album to any Kraut- and Jazz-rock fan best achieved by buying the CD-reissue which combines both of their first two releases for highest value/money ratio. Dieter Fischer, ProgArchives.com

Aera was a very capable, occasionally excellent, German band that specialized in largely instrumental music that straddled the fence between jazz-rock and progressive rock. Their debut LP, Humanum Est, leans more toward the progressive rock end of the spectrum. It features the riff-based compositions of guitarist Muck Groh, who was previously in Ihre Kinder - a progressive folk-rock band. Listening to this LP, it's not hard to fathom Groh's involvement in folk music: he's fond of his twelve string, and his intricate leads and solos on that instrument bring Dan Ar Bras to mind. On the electric 6-string, he leans toward a Jeff Beck / Janne Schaffer sort of approach - he's not really a jazz guitarist, but an accomplished soloist in a creative blues-rock vein. The bulk of Aera's jazz influence at this point could be credited to the band's other main soloist, soprano saxophonist / flutist Klaus Kreuzeder - he's quite good. On the minus side, the rhythm section (drummer Wolfgang Teske and bassists Dieter Bauer and Peter Malinowsky) is somewhere between wooden and serviceable. Groh, Kreuzeder (now on alto sax, in addition to flute and soprano sax), and Malinowsky (who also does brief novelty vocals on 2 tracks) are aboard for Aera's 2nd LP, Hand und Fuss. New members include violinist Christoph Krieger and drummer Lucky Schmidt. Though Krieger is decent enough - he sounds pretty nice in unison with Kreuzeder, and he provides an additional solo voice - it is Schmidt's dynamic, jazzy kit work that really kicks Hand und Fuss up several notches above Humanum Est. Several of the compositions (all by Groh, or Groh and Malinowsky) have a vague Mahavishnu feel. As a guitar soloist, however, Groh still resembles Ted Nugent more than he does John McLaughlin. Kreuzeder's playing is even stronger than on Humanum Est - an amazing feat when you consider that he is confined to a wheelchair. The great variety and increased complexity of the compositions is the most appealing aspect of this recording - it's hard to imagine fans of instrumental progressive rock and jazz-rock not liking this LP. Though Hand und Fuss may not floor you with jaw-dropping chops and astounding technique, there's a folksy warmth to it that I find lacking in much of the fusion / progressive genre. The music on Hand und Fuss is undeniably charming, imaginative, distinctive, and still bears repeated listening. For many, this will be their finest moment. Erna Schmidt - Live '69-'71 (Garden Of Delights) 1969 - 1971

Biography : In the early 60s a band named R & B CORPORATION was founded near Stuttgart which was playing conventional beat music with Wolfgang Mathias at the drums. Hubert Stütz (guitar) joined in 1965 and brought up some new blues rock elements. Further on the band crossed the frontiers to improvised music oriented at Jimi Hendrix, bands like Cream or Ten Years After and soon they became known in southern Germany. Walter Laible (bass) joined in 1967 and they played as the support for Rory Gallagher, Brian Auger, Procul Harum, Alexis Korner and others. According to the upcoming krautrock movement they started to write their own music/lyrics and decided to change the band name. In a proper sense the story of ERNA SCHMIDT was now opened in 1969. The band continuously enlarged with Rolf Schiegl as the second drummer, Sam Drake (flute, piano), hammond player Romi Schickle, also known as a member of PROF. WOLFFF, Peter Mayer (vibraphone) and a brass section. They gigged all over Germany and could also be seen on stage at the legendary Quartier Latin in Berlin. Known for incredibly long improvisations, usually being stoned on the stage and jamming all the way, often together with guest musicians, they developed to a very popular live band in the meanwhile. The next change occured when Schiegl and Drake left the band at the end of the year but Hartmut Mau came in as a substitute who played several wind instruments and was part of a circle around bass player Helmut Hattler, a founding member of KRAAN. Now as a quartet they had a widespreaded repertoire of selfcomposed songs consisting of improvisations and provided with variations on every gig. Due to a friend of drummer Mathias 20 hours of recordings of that time survived which were remastered by Mick Baumeister in his studio. The band decided to publish only some excerpts which are having an excellent sound quality. The album 'Live '69 -'71' was finally released by the Garden Of Delights label in 2000 with a 32-page colour booklet. The songs are sought out very well showing the band on a high musical/technical level and avoiding endless noodling. Stütz's various guitar playing alternating between psychedelic, heavy and jazz rock is remarkable and combined with Mau's flute the songs sometimes are close to Jethro Tull. The first TV appearance came in spring 1971 and some professional studio recordings followed for example at the wellknown studios of SWF Baden-Baden. Due to the Count of Metternich, who gave the possibility to live in his country mansion at Wintrup, the band changed the domicile to the northwest of Germany. Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser of the Ohr label offered ERNA SCHMIDT a recording contract - but it was never put into action. Probably the main reason was that Hartmut Mau didn't want to become a professional musician. He left the band. Other flute players were auditioned but nobody met the band's expectations.MISSUS BEASTLY's Jürgen Benz tried to help but gradually doubts about the musical concept began to increase. And when the band was searching for a new bass player because Walter Laible left, Helmut Hattler decided to come with his friends. But the collaboration failed. Whereas KRAAN arised at Wintrup the disbandment of ERNA SCHMIDT couldn't be stopped anymore until they finally gave up in the springtime of 1972. Review by Uwe Zickel

Cannabis India - SWF Session 1973

As a child in Germany, Oliver PETRY began playing piano at a very young age, switching later to organ after hearing contemporary greats as Keith EMERSON. By about 1970, PETRY, drummer Rüdiger BRAUNE and bassist Dirk FLECK had formed cover band The FUTURES but by 1971, had transformed into CANNABIS INDIA, a faux-classical power trio based near Düsseldorf and part of the famous Wuppertal scene (known as a center of 'Krautrock' with acts as Holderlin garnering national attention).

CANNABIS INDIA featured all-original compositions from PETRY and after good word of mouth began spreading about their live shows, the trio secured billing with artists as EARTH AND FIRE, BEGGARS OPERA, and EILIFF. Their appearances at Berlin's IFA and the first Wuppstock Festival in 1973 were highlights. The band's long-forgotten recordings - done in May '73 at the Sudwestfunk and finally released in 2009 as 'SWF Session 1973' on Long Hair Records - are our only taste of this unit in the studio and present a raw but dynamic early form of heavy, organ-based symphonic rock in the vein of ELP's 'Tarkus' period and smaller bands as Canada's ExCUBUS [then Incubus].

Guitarist Martin KOHMSTEDT [of SOLOMON JACKDAW] joined the band but left in '74, after which CI split-up. Shortly after, Oliver PETRY founded UNIVERSE with ex-SOLOMON JACKDAW members and before this group's breakup, they recorded several cuts at the Studio Neugebauer [included as bonus cuts on SWF Session]. Later, bandmates reunited to work on the FRITZ MüLLER BAND helping to record the album 'Kommt'. Oliver PETRY became lead vocalist for EMPIRE along with Dirk FLECK on bass and released an LP in 1981. PETRY now works as a graphics & sound designer for websites and plans a future music project called The Unbrothers.

Firmly recommended to any fans of vintage organ Prog at its most immediate and sincere, CANNABIS INDIA's 'SWF Session 1973' is a must for lovers of pure old fashioned symphonic rock. progarchives.com

Bullfrog - Bullfrog (2013 Digipack Remaster) 1976

Bullfrog were born in Munich in 1973. Their brand of krautrock, featuring mostly guitar and some mean organ play, is rather melodious and a bit reminiscent of German art rockers Jane. Their latest incarnation consisted of keyboardist Harald Kaltenecker, guitarist Sebastian Leitner, bassist Vincent Trost, drummer Ali Halmatoglu and vocalist Gerd Hoch (who committed suicide in the summer of '95).
Their first (eponymous) album didn't break any grounds but their second, "High in Spirit" ('77) boasted a much better production and thus brought the band a sizeable following both in Germany and in the US. It also gathered quite a huge fan base in Portugal where the album managed to relegate both Abba and Pink Floyd to second and third place on the local charts. Encouraged by the warm reception, they toured a great deal and finally released a third LP in 1980, "Second Wind", their most accomplished work to date. They were gathering material for a fourth when dissension grew amongst the ranks and brought an end to their reunion. Interesting material but not essential. Recommended strictly for collectors of early krautrock. progarchives.com

Nosferatu - Nosferatu 1970

Named after the vampire from the early expressionist film, Nosferatu were one of the earliest groups from Germany to explore beyond the conventional beat music and blues into the far more progressive realms of Krautrock in the late 1960s. The group is also one of the most obscure Krautrock bands, with only one record to their name.

The 1968 students riots in Paris were the spark for several groups of musicians, in both France and Germany, and that event marks the starting point of the earliest Krautrock bands, among them Can, Xhol Caravan, and others, including Nosferatu. One early member was guitarist Michael Winzkowski, who later went on to the better-known prog-rock band Epsilon in 1970. The group's music still owed some debt to more conventional British rock and earlier beat bands, but also saw the group adventuring out on longer compositions and some fusion elements, and their music was imbued with that dark Teutonic angst that often distinguishes Krautrock from other rock music of that era.

In 1970 Nosferatu recorded their one and only self-titled album, which was released by the French label Vogue in both France and Germany. At this time the band consisted of vocalist Michael Thierfelder, sax and flute player Christian Felke, bassist Michael Kessler, organist Reinhard Grohe, guitarist Michael Meixner, and drummer Byally Braumann. Since Vogue wasn't a label normally associated with Krautrock, record sales languished and the group disbanded the next year when Felke joined Winzkowski in Epsilon. The rare LP has since become one of the more pricey items on the collector's circuit, with mint copies fetching the equivalent of $500 or more. In 1993 the album was released on CD by Ohrwaschl. Orange Peel - Orange Peel (Digipack) 1970

Orange Peel is one of the first heavy progressive german act. The band was formed in 1968 by Peter Bischof, Leslie Link, Heinrich Mohn, Ralph Wilrheiss and Curt Cress, a young drummer of 17 years. They spearheaded the Krautrock movement with Faust and Amon Duul II by adding powerful organ playing to raw psychedelic rock. However, Orange Peel released only one album, and disbanded immediately after in 1970. Most members pursued their careers with another progressive bands. The bassist Helmut Mohn replaced Michael Ertl in Epsilon, while Peter Bischof joined Emergency and Curt Cress went to many bands like Emergency, Passport and Atlantis. Their unique album was recorded at the end of 1969. Mostly featuring long tracks, the record is undoublty one of the most heavy psychedelic organ-based progressive albums of its time, with elongated solos of angry organ and guitar, announcing the debut albums from Eloy and Grobschnitt.Little known, Orange Peel was one of the main bands from early Krautrock. STREETMARK was founded 1968 in Düsseldorf, when Dorothea Raukes, who had studied Classical Music and played keyboards, met the Brothers Thomas and Bernd Schreiber, both guitarists. Dorothea and Thomas formed the nucleus of the band. In the beginning STREETMARK played mainly covers of the BEATLES, Jon Mayall and DEEP PURPLE. In 1969 they refused a proposal for a record deal. In the following five years STREETMARK developed their own style mainly based on the compositions of Dorothea and Thomas, influenced by PROCOL HARUM, FOCUS and ELP. Finally in 1975 STREETMARK recorded their debut record "Nordland" for Sky. The record was produced and recorded by Connie Plank with the following line up : Dorothea Raukes (keyboards), Thomas Schreiber (guitar), Hans Schweiss (drums), Georg Buschmann (vocals), Wolfgang Westphal (bass). Bernd Schreiber did the mixing and Soundboard duties.

"Nordland" was a brillant debut record, the band had taken the time to play the compositions live and to work them out. The general musicianship is quite high; the only weak point, as often in German bands are the English vocals. In 1977 STREETMARK released their second record "Eileen" with Wolfgang Riechmann, a solo recording artist, who had joined the band on vocals and keyboards. Tragically he was murdered in 1978, before the release of his solo record "Wunderbar". Sky re-released "Eileen" in 1979 with the new title "Wolfgang Riechmann and Streetmark" with one bonus track. Later on the record was renamed "Dreams". The third (fourth) record "Dry", entirely instrumental, was released in 1979. In 1981 STREETMARK released their last record "Sky Racer", with Dorothea Raukes as the only founding member left. It is still an interesting record but much more Pop influenced. progarchives.com

Gravestone - War (Garden Of Delights) 1980

In the eighties, Gravestone from Illertissen, Swabia, became quite famous as a hard rock group. What many people don't know is that they initially - and with a different line-up - released two LPs with progressive rock and critical lyrics, namely "Doomsday" (AVC K 793102 ST) from 1979 and "War" (AVC LP 80020 ST) from 1980, in small editions of 1000 copies each. Meanwhile both albums have been released as CDs on Garden of Delights; both drawn from the master tape. In addition to a very detailed band history the booklets of both CDs contain a lot of photographs, a complete discography also of the group's late period, cover and label reproductions, etc. "War" contains more vocals than "Doomsday", namely four tracks sung in English, two in German, and one instrumental piece. Gravestone - Doomsday (Garden Of Delights) 1979

Gravestone play somewhat somber Progressive Rock of a rough nature. This is a re-release of their 1979 album on the Garden of Delights label. The music is at times jazzy and bouncy, and there are hints of blues throughout, and the majority of the tracks are instrumental. There is a lot of improvisational blues styled stuff going on here. The guitars are the main lead instruments, although there is an organ tickling the background, the guitars are full front, screaming in true psychedelic fashion on the latter tracks of this album. progarchives.com

Pop & Blues Festival '70 (Live) 1970

Thrice Mice:
A sextet from Hamburg, playing the patented, distinctive German type of progressive jazz-rock typified by underground legends like Xhol or Out Of Focus (2nd & 3rd album). The leading soloist in Thrice Mice was Wolfgang Buhre. He often tried to copy the wah-wah sax style of Ian Underwood of Mothers Of Invention. Their album was recorded during November and December 1970 in Hamburg and released on Phillips in 1971. After a couple of years, the group resurfaced as Altona and made two further albums for RCA in 1974 and 1975.

Frumpy:
The Krautrock scene may be best known for creating some of the weirdest abd revolutionary rock music, yet there was another side to the scebe, of progressive that rivalled the best in Britain, of which Frumpy were at the forefront, followed by the like of Jane, Eloy, Novalis, Message, et al. This band played their own brand of progressive rock that was mainly influenced by blues, soul and hard rcok with some minor classical elements. Their female vocalist Inga Rumpf had a quite weird voice, sounding more like a man than a woman. However, the main musician in the band was their French organ-player Jean-Jacques Kravetz who delivered some solos that nearly were on par with the best progressive rock keyboardist.
Frumpy later transmuted into the more commercial Atlantis.

Sphinx Tush:
1969 the famous trio "Sphinx Tush" was founded with Zabba Lindner on drums and Andreas Smietana on bass. Their music was something like early punkmusic, long before punk was getting popular. They used to play in the biggest hall of the town (Ernst-Merck-Halle), where groups like the "Rolling Stones" used to play. They have played at the last evening of the well known Star-Club in St. Pauli (thats where the Beatles started) and they've done many live-perfomances at the radiostation NDR.

Tomorrow's Gift:
Like Frumpy and Joy Unlimited, they were a blues and soul-rock band who turned on, tuned in and dropped out to the progressive music at the end of the sixties. Both mentioned bands had female vocalists, as had Tomorrow's Gift: Ellen Meyer. Arguably she didn't have a voice as strong as Inga Rumpf, but hers was good enough to serve the music. Tomorrow's Gift was really a band of future talents, three of the members being still teenagers. Original guitarist Carlo Karges later worked with groups as different as Novalis, Extrabreit and Nena. He also guested on the Release Music Orchestra album 'Get The Ball' (1976). Manfred Rurup later recorded with Carsten Bohn's Bandstand, Elephant and Inga Rumpf.

Moolah - Woe Ye Demons Possessed 1974

Formed in the 70s by Walter Burns and Maurice Roberson, Moolah delivers a bewitching tranced-out droning krautrockin' universe. Their own musical identity is made of lysergic-aleatoric experiments, garage sounds, neo-shamanic voice incantations and cosmic synth ondulations. Rather intuitive anarchic release but it contains some memorable creative moments and nicely done eastern-like buzzing spaciness. Woe Ye Demons Possessed (1974) is a rarity and a must have for fans of the most experimental side of krautrock music (Eruption, Kluster, Organisation, Think, Zweistein.) progarchives.com
