Wild Cherries - Thats Life (2007 Remaster) 1965 - 1968

Biography:If you go just by the records they managed to release during the 1960s, there's not really enough to make a Wild Cherries album. This reissue, however, makes the most of out their slim recorded legacy, combining both sides of their four 1967-1968 singles with 16 previously unreleased 1965-1966 bonus tracks. It's the eight tracks (all written or co-written by guitarist Lobby Loyde) from the singles, though, that are the truly significant ones, since it was on these that the Wild Cherries laid down the music that was among the most innovative in '60s Australian rock. On the most notable of those 45s, the group fused psychedelia, early hard/progressive rock, and soul in a manner that no other Australian band of the time was doing on record, particularly on "Krome Plated Yabby," "That's Life," and "Gotta Stop Lying." These are somewhat similar to the rock being played by some Detroit outfits of the late '60s, and if they're certainly more pop-oriented than, say, the MC5, they do offer a pretty intriguing blend of creative ambition and muscular crunch. The other, far less well-known songs from the singles might surprise listeners who've heard the other tracks on compilations, as they're more straightforward soul-rock than you'd expect (adding some pop-oriented orchestration on "I Don't Care"), though they're fairly good as that style goes. The remaining 16 tracks taken from studio outtakes and home/live recordings capture the group at an earlier pre-Loyde stage at which they were much more an R&B/rock band along the lines of British bands like the Rolling Stones and Yardbirds. In fact, just one of these songs (the quite admirably mean'n'lean "Get Out of My Life") is a group original; not only are all of the others covers, but most of them are covers of tunes that major British Invasion bands like the Yardbirds, the Who, and Manfred Mann put on their early recordings. This section of the CD isn't nearly as original as the Loyde-led material, then, and it's not as well recorded either, though the fidelity's satisfactory. Still, the Wild Cherries do sound like a good, tough, mid-'60s British R&B band at this stage in their development, and without those tracks...well, there wouldn't be enough for a CD. As is standard for the Half a Cow label, the packaging is superb, featuring a 36-page liner booklet jammed with photos. Review by Richie Unterberger

Nuggets From The Golden State - The Scorpio Records Story 1965 - 1967

The Berkeley-based Fantasy label, known primarily for jazz, made some limited forays into the San Francisco Bay Area rock scene, though only one of its acts (Creedence Clearwater Revival) had a notable impact. This 27-cut anthology collects material recorded for its Scorpio subsidiary in the mid-'60s. It's mostly average garage pop-rock, heavy on the British Invasion influence, most notable for the appearance on CD of nine tracks by The Golliwogs (who would later become Creedence). The Newcastle Five featured future Cold Blood singer Lydia Pense, but aside from that, there's no reason for anyone but collectors to go out of their way to find this. discogs.com

Nuggets From The Golden State - Crystalize Your Mind 1965 - 1967 (Repost)

Big Beat's Nuggets of the Golden State series is a disappointing collection of unreleased, vaguely psychedelic '60s garage rock from the San Francisco area, much of it (the entirety of this CD) from the archives of the Golden State Recorders studio. This volume is the least impressive of the lot, combining unreleased material with rare singles on the MTA, Tower, and Uptown labels. There are occasional good moments the fruity psych-pop of the Love Exchange, the primitive psychedelia of the Vejtables but they're drowned by the generic material of no-names like the Living Children, the Poor Souls, the Rear Exit, and the Transatlantic Train. The psychedelic influences that make themselves heard are clumsy and grating, and judged as garage rock, it's considerably below average. allmusic.com

The Selfish Cales - Light Worms & Old Dancing Ladies 2011 (Great Discovery Italian Band)

The Selfish Cales were born on 2010, thanks to a lucky meetings on Myspace between Andy, Chris and Gabriel. Their passionate idea was to bring a complete music reality, also concern to live performances and visual impact.

The early months give the birth of their first EP, sign of a simple but close-knit alchemy. The first EP consists in 5 tracks distributed in 100 promotional copies, followed by many gigs in northern Italy. The sound was still markedly garage, but with Psychedelic shades and a sixties-oriented identity.

In 2011, The Selfish Cales changed their line up due to the departure of Chris (rhythm guitar), which will bring to the entrance of Albert Cale on Organ, Piano and Mellotron. In this period the second EP “The Selfish Cales II” has been published in 100 copies, with a more mature sound characterized by various influences. Here it states the psychedelic character of the band, and the Indian Sitar takes part in songs and live performances.

Their young way continues through many gigs and a second videoclip from the Single “Useless”, plus a side-project that give the birth to “Dandelion Seeds”, a tribute of five songs from the '60s Psychedelic Pop.

Their most recent publication is “Young Old Fashioned Girl”, another single that would be a preview of the next step of the band: the first LP, from which emerges an overview of the present and future sound of the Cales. The Selfish Cales

The Blueskins - Word Of Mouth 2004

The band was formed after Spendlove and Brown met at music college in 1999. After college they continued to play together and drafted in school friends Smith and Townsend. In 2003 considerable interest in the band resulted in an influx of A&R men to Gawthorpe and a signing to Domino Records. Three singles, an EP and an album followed, and the band embarked on a tour of Europe and the United States, recording in Mississippi with record producer, Dennis Herring.
In 2005 a change of direction saw Smith and Townsend leave the band and, later that year, the remaining two founder members brought in the Russian former tennis professional Andrei Nosov on guitar and Welsh student Tom Bailey on five-string bass guitar to replace them. The new members brought with them a range of new influences including native Siberian music and dance-inspired indie.[citation needed]
The band spent much of 2006 writing new material and showcasing it to fans across the country. In the summer their 2003 single "Change My Mind" was featured on a television advertisement for Lynx shower gel. It generated considerable interest in the single, leading it to be re-released. Despite the interest from fans, the band's record label did not push the single and it received limited airplay.[citation needed] Finding themselves unable to market the band, and choosing to concentrate on their more commercial signings, Domino Records parted company with The Blueskins, leaving them on the lookout for a new label.
The band spent the latter months of 2006 touring their new songs and writing new material. At the end of the year they played a small gig in their local pub in Gawthorpe, inviting friends to take to the stage and perform with them. After writing new tunes and touring the UK for two years with the new line-up, they decided to disband in April 2008.
Following the split, Ryan Spendlove, The singer and frontman of The Blueskins decided to go solo and formed his own style of acoustic Blues/Folk. In January 2011 he signed a record deal with Candyrat Records in the United States where he recorded his first solo album in 3 days titled "Fable" which was released on 5 April 2011.
Word of Mouth is the debut album from Wakefield blues-rock four-piece The Blueskins who have been described as "the sound of a teenage Led Zeppelin ripping through 'Rock 'n' Roll' in their parents' garage". A heavy, ultra-raw blast of blues-rock infused with the spirit of garage punk, this throwback to the 70s was produced by Richard Formby (Spacemen 3) and features the singles 'Change My Mind' and 'The Stupid Ones' as well as 'Ellie Meadows' from their 'Magic Road' EP. discogs.com

Nova Local - Nova 1 1967

This band were students at University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Their album, which was recorded in New York in December 1966, is definitely worth investigating and is a minor collectable. Its very Anglophile sound garnered it a U.K. release, although the band had split by April 1967.
Bassist Jim Opton told U-Spaces:- "We were a band that was making a pretty good living playing fraternity parties around the campus, and a few cellar clubs in Chapel Hill. My fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha, was sponsoring a charity concert for our scholarship fund, and we decided to go for broke that year and book a big name. We contacted William Morris Agency in New York, and booked Chad and Jeremy. We needed an opening act, so I booked my own band... got us real cheap. The deal was that Rob Heller, who was with the Morris Agency would come and hear us play. He signed us immedately after the concert. A week later he hooked us up with Elliot Mazur, who became our producer. Elliott also worked as a song peddler for E.B. Marks Music, who published the music. We got a recording contract with Decca, I don't know how, but Rob put that deal together with Elliott, and the next thing I know, we are in the studio with all kinds of famous people that had us in awe for the first 35 seconds or so. I do know that somebody thought we were kind of special, because the studio was absolutely closed to visitors while we were there, and we were not allowed to take home raw tape to play for anyone. We did a lot of things that were pretty advanced for our time. Listen carefully to Morning Dew for example. The strange vocal effects were done by feeding the vocals through a Leslie Tone Cabinet from a Hammond B3. Also, the bass lead is the first bass feedback lead I think I can remember in a rock song. I blew up the amp doing it!! Cost me $750 (a LOT of money I didn't have in 1966)!! But, it was a hell of a lick. The album was essentially recorded by five of us: Randy, Bill, Joe, Cam and me. Phil had departed for law school. I believe he is alive and well, and practicing law in Charlotte, N.C."
"Actually, there is one little piece or two of rock and roll history that goes with that album. It was the first ever recorded using the very new, and relatively unknown, Dolby NR System. It took up a good size room at the time. The engineer for the album, Fred Cretera, was also the engineer for Simon and Garfunkel."
Joe Mendyk had earlier played in Tri-Power, The Better Days and The Warlocks (with an excellent 45 on Decca). The 'A' side of their first 45, excellent harmony pop-punk, can be heard on Echoes In Time. Vol. 2, the flip is on the album. Forgotten Man, also from the album, has resurfaced on Baubles, Vol. 1.
