A Passing Fancy - A Passing Fancy (2000 Pacemaker Entertainment Digipack) 1968

Biography A Passing Fancy was born out of Toronto's Yorkville Village scene in the mid-'60s. In 1967 the band released its debut single, "I'm Losing Tonight," which immediately became a hit and scored high on the east coast charts. In 1968, A Passing Fancy released a self-titled album on the independent Boo Records label that was well received and garnered good reviews. The Boo label, formed by two record store owners, only released the album in the Toronto area, so national fame and exposure eluded the band. A Passing Fancy was British-influenced pop with elements of psychedelia and an American garage sound. The band went through a couple of lineup changes while recording the album, but all musicians were credited in the album liner notes. The main songwriters in the band were Jay Telfer and brothers Fergus and Greg Hambleton. The songs were well written and the music was well played. Shortly after the release of the album, one more single followed, "I Believe in Sunshine," which was also a hit. This single broke out across Canada and attracted interest south of the border, as well as with some major labels, but unfortunately it was too late and the band folded. Telfer and the Hambletons, in particular Fergus (as he went by for a time) went on to write more songs and record with other bands in the '70s. They also made a couple of solo albums that were well received and are still active today on the Canadian music scene. Greg Hambleton went on to form Axe Records while Fergus Hambleton continued to perform with his reggae band the Satellites. This reissue of the original Boo Records album by Pacemaker Records in association with the U.S. reissue label Timothy's Brain, is housed in a beautiful digipack case with original album artwork. Although this album contains no bonus tracks (as none were available) or additional liner notes, the sound quality is superb and is taken from the original master tapes. An exciting and long-lost piece of the early Canadian music scene that has thankfully been restored and made available once again for all to hear and a new generation to discover. allmusic.com

The Selfish Cales - Throw Your Watch To The Water 2015 (Authorized)

Biography : The Selfish Cales were born on 2010, thanks to a lucky meetings on Myspace between Andy and Gabriel. Their passionate idea was to bring a complete music reality, also concern to live performances and visual impact.
The early months give the birth of their first EP, sign of a simple but close-knit alchemy. The first EP consists in 5 tracks distributed in 100 promotional copies, followed by many gigs in northern Italy. The sound was still markedly garage, but with Psychedelic shades and a sixties-oriented identity. In 2011, The Selfish Cales changed their line up due to the departure of Chris (rhythm guitar), which will bring to the entrance of Albert Cale on Organ, Piano and Mellotron. In this period the second EP “The Selfish Cales II” has been published in 100 copies, with a more mature sound characterized by various influences. Here it states the psychedelic character of the band, and the Indian Sitar takes part in songs and live performances. Their young way continues through many gigs and a second videoclip from the Single “Useless”, plus a side-project that give the birth to “Dandelion Seeds”, a tribute of five songs from the '60s Psychedelic Pop. In September 2013, the first LP "Light Worms And Old Dancing Ladies" comes out: the album establishes a transitional phase of the sound of The Cales, between Garage and wider openings to Psychedelia, Progressive and Pop. The album was released digitally on Record Union, plus a hundred copies promotional CD-Digipack copies. From October 2013, with the departure of Albert (keyboards), starts a period of several changes in the line-up that will find their final resolution one year after, with the participation at the 25th edition of Psych Out Festival: the arrival of Sarah Cale (Bass), brings a new Power Trio live formule, and the composition of the second LP. Wild Cherries - Thats Life (2007 Remaster) 1965 - 1968

Biography:If you go just by the records they managed to release during the 1960s, there's not really enough to make a Wild Cherries album. This reissue, however, makes the most of out their slim recorded legacy, combining both sides of their four 1967-1968 singles with 16 previously unreleased 1965-1966 bonus tracks. It's the eight tracks (all written or co-written by guitarist Lobby Loyde) from the singles, though, that are the truly significant ones, since it was on these that the Wild Cherries laid down the music that was among the most innovative in '60s Australian rock. On the most notable of those 45s, the group fused psychedelia, early hard/progressive rock, and soul in a manner that no other Australian band of the time was doing on record, particularly on "Krome Plated Yabby," "That's Life," and "Gotta Stop Lying." These are somewhat similar to the rock being played by some Detroit outfits of the late '60s, and if they're certainly more pop-oriented than, say, the MC5, they do offer a pretty intriguing blend of creative ambition and muscular crunch. The other, far less well-known songs from the singles might surprise listeners who've heard the other tracks on compilations, as they're more straightforward soul-rock than you'd expect (adding some pop-oriented orchestration on "I Don't Care"), though they're fairly good as that style goes. The remaining 16 tracks taken from studio outtakes and home/live recordings capture the group at an earlier pre-Loyde stage at which they were much more an R&B/rock band along the lines of British bands like the Rolling Stones and Yardbirds. In fact, just one of these songs (the quite admirably mean'n'lean "Get Out of My Life") is a group original; not only are all of the others covers, but most of them are covers of tunes that major British Invasion bands like the Yardbirds, the Who, and Manfred Mann put on their early recordings. This section of the CD isn't nearly as original as the Loyde-led material, then, and it's not as well recorded either, though the fidelity's satisfactory. Still, the Wild Cherries do sound like a good, tough, mid-'60s British R&B band at this stage in their development, and without those tracks...well, there wouldn't be enough for a CD. As is standard for the Half a Cow label, the packaging is superb, featuring a 36-page liner booklet jammed with photos. Review by Richie Unterberger

Music Machine - The Bonniwell Music Machine (2014 Box 2CD Big Beat Records) 1967

Biography : The Music Machine were renamed the Bonniwell Music Machine when they went to Warner Bros., as the original lineup disbanded at some point, leaving only chief singer and songwriter Sean Bonniwell. Much of the material on Warner, however, was recorded by the original group, and this album was pasted together from some singles (some of which had appeared on Original Sound in 1967) and other tracks, both by the original incarnation and a second outfit that was pretty much a Sean Bonniwell solo vehicle. Accordingly, the tone of the album is pretty uneven, but much of the material is excellent. In fact, some of the songs rate among their best; a few are also found on the Rhino anthology, but other first-rate tunes ("Bottom of the Soul," "Talk Me Down," "The Trap") are not. Some of the cuts (presumably those recorded after the first lineup broke up) find Bonniwell branching out from psych-punk into a poppier and more eclectic direction, sometimes with very good results, sometimes not. Poets - Scotland's No.1 Group (2000 DynoVox) 1963 - 1967

Biography: For most purposes, this is a fine and definitive overview of the output of the band that was indeed Scotland's number one group in the 1960s, in quality if not commercial success. Both sides of all six of the Poets' 1964-1967 singles are here, as well as no less than 11 demos that were not released at the time. One flaw worth noting is that the singles are not mastered from the best possible tapes; however, the difference in fidelity between this and a compilation from more, shall we say, above-the-board sources is so minimal as to be almost meaningless. Fans of the Poets (and they are more numerous than one might suppose) might well already have another, quite similar compilation, In Your Tower, which includes much but not all of the contents from Scotland's No. 1 Group. So, how does one choose? Well, that's a tough one. Each disc has the essential core of the band's discography: both sides of those half-dozen singles. Each also has the quite good, if a little scratchy and muffled, 1965 demos "I'll Keep My Pride" and "It's So Different Now." In Your Tower, however, does have some items not on Scotland's No. 1 Group, and although some of those are pretty dispensable, two are noteworthy: the hypnotic George Gallacher post-Poets track "Dawn," and the mysterious unreleased late-'60s song "Never Thought She Would." Scotland's No. 1 Group, however, has no less than nine 1963-1964 demos not on the other compilation, and although their fidelity veers from substandard to downright treacherous, these include some very good originals: the folk-rockish "Love Is Fading Away," the doomy pseudo-Merseybeat of "This Woman Mine," and the chipper "With You By Me" (the last two of these songs are each presented in two different versions). Those interested enough in the Poets in the first place to want a compilation should throw in the towel and get both. It's still frustrating that the optimum Poets anthology which would include all the singles from the master tapes, everything from these two discs, and other unreleased tracks rumored to exist in the vaults has yet to be assembled. Lincoln Street Exit - Drive It 1970

Biography : This disc is a great re-release of Lincoln St. Exit's early material! It easily stands up to the releases of any other underground psychedelic band of the era (The Chob, Moving Sidewalks, etc). Between this and the ENTRANCE album, released under their then current name Xit, in the 70s; one would have the bulk of the Lincoln St. Exit material. This would leave a die-hard fan only to track down their "Who's Been Driving My Little Yellow Taxi Cab b/w Paper Place", "Half a Dream / Sunny Sunday b/w Whatever Happened to Baby Jesus" and the elusive " Whatever Happened Pt. 1 b/w Whatever Happened Pt. 2" singles, to have a complete collection. The DRIVE IT EP features the heaviest and most blazing psychedelic guitar material, while ENTRANCE is on the rather mellow ballad side. The only exceptions on ENTRANCE are the rockin' "Mississippi Riverboat Gamblin' Man", and "She's My Everything" which substitutes sax and piano solos for electric guitar. Between these two releases, only "Soulful Drifter" and "Sunny Sunday Dream" are shared in common. The DRIVE IT version of "Soulful Drifter" is 1:10 shorter than the other version (presumably from an earlier recording), and has no 'string section', organ or tambourine. The DRIVE IT "Sunny Sunday Dream" is a simple studio recording that's basically identical, except the ENTRANCE version is in excellent stereo, and includes a completely different ending in which so much echo is added that it becomes a chaotic mess before the rhythm section drops out, leaving only the organ and howling guitar (for 18 extra seconds). As they headed into the 70s this group became unconcerned with Pop culture's idea of 'hip' and wrote less Pop-oriented tunes; opting instead for drawn out, native drummed, native sung, orchestral concept albums. All great stuff. sambson

Nuggets From The Golden State - Crystalize Your Mind 1965 - 1967 (Repost)

Big Beat's Nuggets of the Golden State series is a disappointing collection of unreleased, vaguely psychedelic '60s garage rock from the San Francisco area, much of it (the entirety of this CD) from the archives of the Golden State Recorders studio. This volume is the least impressive of the lot, combining unreleased material with rare singles on the MTA, Tower, and Uptown labels. There are occasional good moments the fruity psych-pop of the Love Exchange, the primitive psychedelia of the Vejtables but they're drowned by the generic material of no-names like the Living Children, the Poor Souls, the Rear Exit, and the Transatlantic Train. The psychedelic influences that make themselves heard are clumsy and grating, and judged as garage rock, it's considerably below average. allmusic.com

Monks - Black Monk Time (2009 Light In The Attic) 1966

Biography : The story of the Monks is one of those rock & roll tales that seems too good to be true -- five Americans soldiers stationed in Germany form a rock band to blow off steam, and after starting out playing solid but ordinary R&B-influenced beat music, their songs evolve into something that bear practically no relation to anything happening in pop in 1966. If anything, the Monks were far wilder than their story would suggest; they may have looked bizarre in their matching black outfits, rope ties, and tonsures, but it was their music that was truly radical, with the sharp fuzz and feedback of Gary Burger's guitar faced off against the bludgeoning clang of Dave Day's amplified banjo (taking the place of rhythm guitar), as Roger Johnston pounded out minimalist patterns on the drums, Eddie Shaw's electric bass gave forth with a monstrous throb, and Larry Clark's keyboard bounced off the surfaces of the aural melee. This would have been heady stuff even without Burger's wild-eyed vocals, in which he howls "I hate you with a passion, baby," "Why do you kill all those kids over there in Vietnam?" and "Believing you're wise, being so dumb" over the band's dissonant fury. The closest thing the Monks had to a musical counterpart in 1966 were the Velvet Underground, but existing on separate continents they never heard one another at the time, and while Lou Reed and John Cale were schooled in free jazz and contemporary classical that influenced their work, the Monks were creating a new species of rock & roll pretty much out of their heads. Given all this, it's all the more remarkable that they landed a record deal with a major German label, and while Black Monk Time, their first and only studio album, doesn't boast a fancy production, the simple, clean recording of the group's crazed sounds captures their mad genius to striking effect, and the mingled rage and lunatic joy that rises from these songs is still striking decades after they were recorded. Within a year of the release of Black Monk Time, the band would break up (reportedly over disagreements about a possible tour of Vietnam), and the two singles that followed the LP were more pop-oriented efforts that suggested the Monks couldn't keep up this level of intensity forever. But in late 1965, the Monks were rock & roll's most savage visionaries, and Black Monk Time preserves their cleansing rage in simple but grand style. allmusic.com

The Sundowners - Captain Nemo 1968

The Sundowners' sole album suffers from the problems afflicting many similarly obscure late-'60s pop/rock LPs on major labels. One, the group can't really decide what they want to be, which though leading to some admirable versatility, also ensures a sort of anonymity. Two, there aren't any really good songs, though one or two come close. It might be backhanded praise, but as those sort of records go, this is considerably above the average; the production's very good and full, the singing and harmonies are decent and committed, and The Sundowners play pretty well. Still, they almost sound like different groups from track to track, or at the very least like they're not quite sure whether to be all-out commercial, or try and slip some hipness in on the side. There are some engaging near-Association-strength vocal harmonies and bouncy melodies that put them close to the sunshine pop camp at times, yet at other times they skirt mushy easy listening rock. "Dear Undecided," clearly the best track, is like a fusion of the Hollies and (if this isn't a contradiction in terms) Herman's Hermits at their toughest, and the one you're most likely to have heard before, since they played it onscreen in an episode of the popular late-'60s TV show It Takes a Thief. Other passages indicate they might have been serious Byrds and Who fans -- "Ring Out Wild Bells" has heavy traces of both groups -- yet they don't pursue those inclinations as all-out as they could have, to their detriment. Then there's a mediocre soul-rock instrumental, slightly psychedelic pop/rock (the title cut), and forced blue-eyed soul. It's not that bad on the whole, but certainly not all it could have been. allmusic.com

The Weeds - Aka The Lollipop Shoppe 1966 - 1971

Led by singer Fred Cole, who had formerly been in the Northwest punk band the Weeds, the Lollipop Shoppe's sole album (from 1968) ranks as one of the better psych-punk LPs, and also as one of the better one-shot rock records of the late '60s. Featuring Cole's choked, bitter phrasing, the group staked out the middle ground between the Seeds (who shared the same manager) and Love, with a bit of fellow L.A. psych-punkers the Music Machine thrown in. If comparisons must be made, they were definitely closer in tone to Love than the Seeds, with a mixture of raunch and reflection in the spirit of Arthur Lee. Cole was one of the few psychedelic performers to make a contribution during the punk era, surfacing in the Portland punk band the Rats in the late '70s. (Richie Unterberger)

The Lollipop Shoppe:  They were originally known as The Weeds and featured Fred Cole as singer.  After The Weeds signed to Uni Records (a now-defunct subsidiary of MCA), their new manager, 'Lord' Tim Hudson, insisted they change their name to The Lollipop Shoppe to fit in with the current trend of bubblegum music.  Hardly bubblegum, they played a mix of garage rock and psychedelia. The album and its single, "You Must Be a Witch," are regarded as period classics and still prized by collectors, though neither made the charts. The band opened for stars such as Janis Joplin and The Doors, and appeared in the biker movie "Angels from Hell". (Sky Skyler)

Mouse And The Traps - The Fraternity Years 1966 - 1969 (Big Beat)

The Zakary Thaks - Face To Face 1967 (Collectables)

Buon Ascolto

The Bad Seeds & The Zakary Thaks - A Texas Battle Of The Bands! 1966 - 1967 (Collectables)

Buon Ascolto

The Shadows Of Knight - Back Door Men 1967 (Sundazed)

Buon Ascolto

The Shadows Of Knight - Gloria 1966 (Sundazed)

Buon Ascolto

West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band - Volume One "The Legendary Unreleased Album" Mono 1966 (Sundazed)

Buon Ascolto

The Leaves - Are Happening! (The Complete Mira Recordings - The Best Of The Leaves) 1965 - 1966

The Music Machine - Turn On (The Music Machine) 1966 (Repertoire)

Buon Ascolto
