Bodkin - Bodkin (Akarma Digipack) 1972

BODKIN were a Scottish quintet that released a self-titled album in 1972. They made a classic-sounding, rough-edged heavy progressive rock with the emphasis on Doug Rome's Hammond organ and complimented by Mick Riddle's guitar, Bill Anderson's bass, Dick Sneddon on drums and the cool wailing of Zeik Hume.
Somewhat more jam-oriented than contemporaries such as ATOMIC ROOSTER or URIAH HEEP and not quite as hard-hitting, BODKIN nevertheless delivered spirited rock music with energetic interplay between guitar and organ, fine musicianship, and distractingly good compositions from the 21 year-old Doug Rome.
A very palatable blend of dark organ-rock and dirty blues, Bodkin will surely please listeners interested in the murky and mysterious early years of the Heavy Prog scene and anyone seeking rare prog. progarchives.com

On the Comet Records website, were you can purchase this self-titled Bodkin LP, it says "File close to Black Sabbath." This music had no similarities to the heavy metal godfathers' recordings. The only thing that was comparable was the inference to Satanism with the burning cross and the offertory head of a ram. What you will find most intriguing besides the music however is how the LP was packaged. The sleeve the album comes housed in has so many folds you will think that you are doing origami. The album cover actually folds out into what you see pictured here, and it is quite large. You can use it as a poster if you wish because the actual LP has its own self-contained sleeve built around the poster. There is no doubt that this is one of the more unusual LP's I have had the pleasure to listen to and enjoy from the label since I started covering their product in 2000.

One of the unjustly neglected British bands of progressive rock , which released one album and sank into oblivion . BODKIN Group was formed in Scotland in 1970 , when musicians from different villages of Scotland decided to team up and play the music they liked . Despite the age difference, they all shared a love for progressive rock . Prior to that, only the drummer Dick Sneddon had in his broad background in the music world - he played in a variety of bit - groups , performed in Germany in the famous "Star Club " . He joined the band in the last turn , when BODKIN looking for a new drummer.

Since 1970 , the band toured constantly on universities , rock clubs and halls of the United Kingdom, where on Fridays and Saturdays youth come to dance and have fun. At first, their repertoire were blues number, then the band's music has become more difficult and complicated. The most memorable event was a concert at the College of Art in Aberdeen in 1971, where they played with WISHBONE ASH. Music occupied an important place in their lives, because of several musicians even had to get a divorce . In the two years up to record their only album, the band tried to buy the more expensive and high-quality equipment , as the musicians were unhappy with their sound and tried to improve it in every way .

There was no money , but the number of fans grew, and it spodviglo group to take part in the competition of young rock bands the UK, conducted by the magazine "The New Musical Express". They easily passed the qualifying round and advanced to the finals with the second result . They were sure to win . However, in contrast to the pre-contest in the finals instead of their instruments musicians were playing instruments other firms , so the group was not able to show their unique sound . Moreover, their speech is literally shocked the judges : Guitarist removed from their heavy guitar riffs , and the organist savaged his " Hammond " for certain sound effects. As a result of this talented group was not even given finish his speech.

A failure in the competition are not confused group, on the contrary, now more than ever it was determined to record an album of his music . They signed a contract with West Records, which in 1972 released the first and only album, a limited edition of 100 copies for sale to fans at concerts. The famous disc jockey John Peel also received a copy of the album. Recalls drummer Dick Sneddon , " We recorded the album in one take . The studio was very cold and we had to play as soon as possible to keep warm. Our organist could easily play at once on five bodies ." If collectors are now hunting for this album and are ready to spread for him a fabulous price , then in 1972 , the band seemed no one was needed . Musicians continued to play , but their families have demanded more attention, and the lack of popularity forced them to break up . Many members of the group went on to play in other local groups.

At the moment, most of the musicians BODKIN continue to enjoy a quiet life in his Scottish villages. Guitarist Mick Riddell engaged in gardening , bassist Bill Anderson has since switched from bass to guitar and became a professional musician. The most difficult fate befell the organist Doug Roam : he became a miner in South Africa.

Listening to this album today , do not understand how so talented musicians could stay completely unnoticed. The whole album is based on the continued roll calls Organ Hammond and heavy guitars, despite the length of some songs , the album never becomes monotonous , full of emotion , and most of this " drive" . The first side of the plate is a composition "Three Days after Death" in two parts. This article was written under the impression of a mini- bus accident , witnessed by the whole group was returning from a concert late at night. The first part begins with a powerful solo alternate Hammond and the guitar , which is gradually transformed into a peaceful and spiritual vocal line , and then followed by incendiary parties to Hammond and the guitar. It seemed , nothing special, but everything is done creatively and tastefully . The second part of the song begins with a quiet, Hammond, and then returned to the theme from the first movement, played in a new way , but also aggressive and tough. Torment Hammond is replaced by vocalist singing a sad , soulful guitar that accompanies the game , reminiscent of WISHBONE ASH. Then again shows class organist , playing at exorbitant rates . "Aunty Mary's Trashcan" also begins with the classic theme on the organ , followed by a party of vocalist and guitarist and organist again " come off " in the alternate soloed . Indeed, such a wild solo on this track , it was rare to hear at the time. And the organist is just superb. And it is an album of musicians from the Scottish heartland . Other tracks on the album are also good .
